Trans Nzoia Governor Patrick Khaemba has asked the National Government to reduce taxes on farm inputs.
Speaking to the press in Kitale, Governor Khaemba said reducing taxes on farm inputs will lower the cost of maize production and other agricultural products.
The County boss said with the prevailing situation local farmers can’t seek international market.
“The cost of maize production is too high and this prevents local farmers from seeking international markets,”said Khaemba.
He said abolition of taxes on inputs is the surest way of lowering the cost of production.
Governor Khaemba pointed out that his administration has been subsidising fertiliser county but more still needs to be done by the National Government for local farmers to compete on international market.
The County Government of Trans Nzoia has been distributing subsidised Mavuno fertiliser to farmers.
The fertiliser subsidy programme has been running since February, 2015.
Mavuno fertiliser was manufactured by ARM Cement Limited specifically for the soils in Trans Nzoia County after soil tests had been conducted.
