Turkana County Governor Josphat Nanok has announced plans to recruit an additional 300 ECDE teachers.
According to the Governor, the move is aimed at reducing the teacher to pupil ration in ECDE centers across the county.
“To reduce teacher-pupil ratio, my government is recruiting 300 ECDE teachers who will be deployed equally to various ECDEs countywide in January 2019,”said Nanok during his State of the County Address.
Governor Nanok said his administration has established 871 ECDE centres and currently there are only 271 teachers. With the hiring of 300 additional teachers the number will rise to 571.
The Governor said in support of Early Childhood education, they have continuously supplied instructional materials and initiated a feeding program in ECDE centers.
“On food supply, 667 tonnes of assorted food items was distributed to ECDE centres since the start of this year,”said Nanok.
He pointed out they have partnered with Marys` Meals and FEED the Children and World Food Program(WFP) to enhance school feeding program.
“We are also formulating a Turkana ECDE Policy jointly with WFP which will be tabled before the County Assembly once it’s complete,”said Nanok.
He added,”I am happy to report that due to our immense investment in the ECDE sector, pupil enrollment has risen from 75,635 in 2013 to 112,657 this year.”
