Ainabkoi MP William Chepkut has asked State to suspend the KSh 4.3 billion fertiliser subsidy programme.
Chepkut said the National Government should instead divert the funds allocated for the programme to raise the price of maize to KSh 3600 per 90Kg bag.
The legislator said the KSh 2300 price approved by Cabinet was too low for maize farmers.
“I want to ask President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto to suspend the fertiliser subsidy programme. They should instead substitute it with better producer prices for maize farmers,”said Chepkut.
Chepkut said he won’t sit back and watch maize farmers from the North Rift region suffer yet they voted for the Jubilee Government.
He however urged leaders from the region not to politicise the maize crisis.
