Iten United FC scooped both the men’s and women’s titles of the Elgeyo Marakwet County Championship.
In the men’s football competition, Iten All Stars lifted the Championship beating Kapsowar Young Stars 3-1 through post-match penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular time.
Kitany won the third-place play off in an entertaining match against Sosurwo FC.
In the women’s category, Iten Starlets upset Kaptabuk from Kapsowar Ward to clinch the title.
In the playoffs, Koptega FC dismissed Wema FC from Endo to settle for the third place.
Iten continued their winning streak in the men’s volleyball, winning 3 sets to nil against Kapcherop/Chesubet.
Kaptarakwa and Tuturung settled for third and fourth place respectively.
The script was the same in the women’s category with Iten beating Chemoibon as Kapkwony settled for the third spot.
Winners in all categories were awarded with a prize money of KSh75,000 and KSh50,000 for the second placed while the third and fourth took home KSh30,000 and KSh20,000 respectively.
Each of the teams was also given sports uniforms.
Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos, who awarded the winners, said he was encouraged by the high level of skills displayed by the players from teams that participated in the games.
The County boss welcomed professional clubs to scout for players in the area.
Governor Tolgos said his administration will continue supporting and nurturing talent.
“Sport is one way of promoting peace and coexistence which is key in development,”he said.
He further announced that the championships will be held annually on rotational basis across the county.
The event was also attended by Deputy Governor Wisley Rotich, MCAs Winnie Kanda, Lorna Tanui, Tich Cheboi, David Kipketer, Musa Limo, Jonah Tanui, Truphena Yego, Shadrack Luley and Lawi Kibire.
Others officials present included CECs Shadrach Yatich, Dr Kiprono Chepkok and Anita Kimwatan.
