Uasin Gishu County Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno is calling on the State to declare cancer a national disaster.
Chemno said the number of people dying of cancer has greatly increased and urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to declare the disease a national disaster.
“I urge the President to declare cancer a National disaster. The rate at which we are burying people in Uasin Gishu and the rate at which we are seeing sick patients, it can no longer be business as usual,”said Chemno.
He said the disease has wiped out wealth in homes and communities due to its costly nature in terms of treatment.
The Deputy Governor further urged the government to initiate intensive research on agro chemicals that have been linked to increased cases of cancer.
Chemno spoke at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital(MTRH), when he led county officials in distributing Christmas gifts to paediatric patients at the Shoe4Africa children’s hospital.
He was accompanied by CECs Esther Mutai (Cooperatives), Joseph Kurgat(Social Services) and Lands Chief Officer Ruth Chelasaw.
