For those who have seen the end of the year, let us thank God. For those who have lost a relative, a friend, a sibling, a husband, a wife, a child, we pray for your comfort and strength and hope for better times in 2019.
Let us celebrate the successes and where we failed to achieve our 2018 goals for one reason or another, let us gracefully carry them as lessons into 2019. 2018 was a year of great collaboration and consultations, though more effort is required in the agriculture and livestock, water, emergency, roads and transport, security and peace building, tourism sectors.
As the Council of Governors, the year 2018 was quite eventful. In collaboration with the Ministry of Devolution and ASAL, the Senate, the County Assemblies Forum, development partners and private sector, the Council held its 5th Annual Devolution Conference in Kakamega attracting over 6,000 delegates.
Unlike the other four conferences, the April 2018 conference focused on the Big Four Agenda sector, and culminated in a comprehensive joint communique.
Another proud achievement is the transformative leadership curriculum launched by the Council in partnership with UNWomen and the Kenya School of Government.
As we now cross over to 2019, the Council’s basket remains full. We are organising a children’s conference that is scheduled to take place from 18 to 20,2019 at Nairobi Primary School. The conference will provide an opportunity for children from all the 47 counties to dialogue with leaders from National and County Governments about devolution.
This is poised as a precursor to the 6th Annual Devolution Conference scheduled for 4-8 March at Kirinyaga University in Kirinyaga County. For us to be able to successfully deliver this for Kenyans, we urge the public to visit our conference website www.devolutionconference.cog.go.ke for registration as delegates as well as booking exhibition booths.
Lastly, in accordance with the Intergovernmental Relations Act, the council will hold its elections for the chairperson, vice chairperson and whip on January 14,2019.
Every end is just a new beginning. Keep your spirit and determination unshaken. As a people, we remain resilient and hardworking. Let us in 2019 maintain fidelity to our constitution and our values. The council wishes you a very happy new year.
