Turkana County Governor Josphat Nanok has launched a boat distribution programme aimed at improving the economic capacity of fishermen along Lake Turkana.
Governor Nanok distributed 14 fibre boats that he said will enable fishermen access fish in deep waters and improve food security in the region.
He said the modern boats will increase the capacity of fishing by 67 per cent as compared floating wood that fishermen have been using.
“These boats are going to increase the capacity of fishing by 67 per cent and they will be able, on a daily basis, to catch 50 to 100 kilograms,”said Nanok.
The County boss said this was part of the county governments plan to support the fisher community along the lake who number about 1200 members.
He said the county government will also distribute fishing nets and acquire cooling systems for fishermen.
