Moiben MP Silas Tiren has lauded President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive to the National Cereals and Produce Board(NCPB) to buy maize at a new price of Sh2500 per 90Kg bag.
Speaking to the press in Eldoret town, Tiren who has been championing for better maize prices, thanked President Kenyatta for addressing the concerns of farmers.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank President Uhuru Kenyatta for taking into account the grievances of maize farmers and instructing the Ministry of Agriculture to open NCPB stores and buying centers so that farmers can deliver their produce,”said Tiren.
The lawmaker pointed out that though they would have wanted a higher price, the new price announced by President Kenyatta was better.
“The price of Ksh2500 might not be what we yearned for as farmers but it’s much better and we shall be keen and take to account those concerned to ensure that actual farmers deliver their produce,”he said.
The lawmaker also called on the government to find a lasting solution to the maize woes that have bedevilled farmers.
“Those calling for diversification should exhaust the maize value chain and they should first tell us to stop eating Ugali,”Tiren added.
Tiren also declared his support for President Kenyatta-Raila Odinga handshake.
He said the handshake was an initiative that has brought stability and will enable the country move forward.
On 2022 succession politics, the Moiben MP said the discussion was premature and that he will declare whom he will support at the right time.
“My support for 2022 presidency shall be pegged on an individual who will be ready and has shown the willingness to help the farmers,”he pointed out.
