The National Assembly Education Committee Chairperson Julius Melly has opposed a move by the Ministry of Education to rehire retired Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) tutors
The Education Ministry in a circular dated 7th January requested for contacts of retired trainers to be rehired in a move aimed at curbing biting shortage that has hit TVET institutions.
However Melly rejected move pointing out that the Ministry was allocated Sh2 billion to hire 2,000 new tutors.
“We will not allow this to happen,”said Melly.
“We gave them money and they must recruit tutors to serve the more than 150 TVET institutions across the country,”the Tinderet MP added.
Officials from the Education Ministry will meet with the committee on January 17.
The ministry is expected to present a report on staff establishment in TVET institutions and recall of he retirees.
