Rift Valley County Assemblies have thrown their weight behind Deputy President Dr William Ruto.
In a joint press statement issued in Eldoret town, Speakers and Members of County Assemblies declared their support for DP Ruto.
“We wish to declare our unwavering support on the Deputy President, Dr William Ruto’s presidential ambitions,”they said in their statement.
Led by Uasin Gishu County Assembly Speaker David Kiplagat and his Baringo counterpart David Kerich, the assembly members also dismissed claims that Deputy President cannot vie for the State House seat on grounds that he will have served in his current position for 10 years.
“He(Deputy President) has a right to vie for the post like any other Kenyan,”read their statement.
They added,”we wish to condemn some leaders who have been driving a narrative that the Deputy President is not eligible to vie for presidency. We believe they are doing this for their own selfish gain.”
The Rift Valley County Assemblies Forum also said they were in support of the Building Bridges initative by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, which seeks to promote national unity.
They however said the initiative should be all inclusive and warned against using it ‘to settle political scores and sideline other leaders’.
On the referendum, the Assemblies said they will only support it if it seeks to strengthen devolution and devolve more resources to Counties.
“We will never support a referendum question that seeks to create some seats to some politicians,”they pointed out.
