Turkana County Government has kicked off plans two sports stadia in bid to enhance sports infrastructure in the region.
According to Sports Chief Officer Dr Jacob Lolelea, the county will construct the stadiums in Ekaales Centre in Kanam Kemer ward and in Lodwar town.
“In our CIDP and our budget we have earmarked funds for two stadiums, Ekaales and one that will be at the former showground site,”said Lolelea.
The Chief Officer said the Ekaales stadium has been allocated Sh17 million and the rehabilitation of the showground stadium has an allocation of Sh10 million in the current financial year. He pointed out that more money will be pumped into the projects in the coming financial years.
He said the county government is also pursuing an offer made by Spain’s Barcelona Football Club to sponsor the construction of Lodwar Stadium.
“We are revisiting an offer by Barcelona to construct a stadium through the Catholic Diocese of Lodwar. We know with such a donor we can construct a standard stadium in Lodwar,”he added.
