Eldama Ravine MP Moses Lessonet has asked the National Government to cushion local farmers against imports.
According to the lawmaker, there is an urgent need to protect local farmers by blocking importation of maize.
“We should not be importing maize from Mexico when it is produced in plenty locally. This year, the harvest has been projected to be over 40 million bags and the government is only purchasing about 3 million bags, that is why we are saying no to importation,” he said.
Lessonet pointed out that some traders imported maize from Mexico, stocked up and are now waiting for the NCPB to open buying stores and make a kill at the expense of local farmers.
He observed that importation of farm produce like milk and maize was impoverishing local farmers and thus should be regulated.
