The National Government is set to announce a new maize price following an outcry from farmers.
Earlier, the state had revealed plans to buy the grains at Sh2,300 per 90 kilograms bag.
The price had elicited protests from farmers and political leaders from North Rift region,Kenya’s breadbasket.
However, the Government seems to have had a second thought with Aiculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri stating that new prices will be announced.
Speaking to the media at the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) in Eldoret, Kiunjuri also said more than ten stores will be put in place as collection centres in North Rift.
” We have put measures to ensure that farmers will not be exploited. We will have aggregated centers in each county so that each farmer will take maize to the nearest place hence reducing transportation cost.” Kiunjuri said.
He said that the centers will be provided enough security for inspections to ensure that the maize is healthy for consumption.
