Maize farmers in Trans Nzoia County today took to the streets to demonstrate in support of MPs Joshua Kutuny(Cherangany), Silas Tiren(Moiben) and Alfred Keter(Nandi Hills) who have been at the forefront demanding better prices for maize.
The hundreds of farmers, led by prominent farmer Samwel Kuto, took their protests to the Kitale National Cereals and Produce Board(NCPB).
They said they were in support of the Kshs. 3600 per 90Kg bag as it has been proposed by the three lawmakers pointing out that the set price of Kshs. 2300 was too low for them.
“We want to also ask the President Uhuru Kenyatta, through his Agriculture Cabinet Secretary, to investigate those who were involved in the importation of maize occasioning the current maize crisis,” said Kuto.
The irate farmers said they country’s staple food remains ugali and therefore the purchase price for maize should be high.
They said they were against calls by a section of leaders from the region that they abandon maize for avocado farming.
On Saturday, MPs Kutuny, Keter asked the National Government to pay farmers Kshs. 3,600 up from the Kshs. 2,300 set two weeks ago by the Strategic Food Reserves Fund.
