Uasin Gishu County Women Rep Gladys Boss Shollei has launched an operation to rehabilitate street children in Eldoret town and its environs.
According to Shollei, the street children will receive treatment for their drug addictions in the rehabilitation centres.
“The initiative to rehabilitate street children will see the older ones taken for training on life skills and we will enrol young ones back to school,”said Shollei.
The County Woman MP said the rehabilitation programme is aimed at reducing the population of street children in Eldoret town.
“We have started a feeding programme for 150 street children and out of these we have identified nine who will be taken for treatment and others who will be enrolled back to school and colleges,”said Shollei.
The street urchins include primary and secondary school drop outs and will be taught skills to help them start businesses to earn a living.
Shollei said the law stipulates that children be given proper care, have shelter and be provided with clothing.
She pointed out that constant police harassment and difficult life on the streets expose street children to danger and can easily transform them to criminals.
