Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny has asked the National Government to write off loans that farmers in North Rift region owe the Agricultural Finance Corporation (AFC).
Speaking in Ngonyek farm, Trans Nzoia county, Kutuny said apart from the production costs that maize farmers incurred to cultivate the crop, the low selling price has made it difficult for farmers to repay their loans.
Kutuny said the move will assist farmers who have been greatly affected by the protracted crisis in the maize sector.
“The government has to waive the loans owed to the AFC by farmers to ease their burden,”said Kutuny.
The lawmaker pointed out that it was the duty of the government to protect farmers noting out that the bailout will go a long way to ease their financial pressure.
In July last year, AFC raised strong objections to proposal for the cancellation of debts owed to it by farmers.
The corporation said writing off the debts would damage its credibility as a lending institutions.
