Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago has asked the Senate to push for timely and regular disbursements of funds to devolved units.
Speaking on Monday when he received Senators Prof Margaret Kamar (Uasin Gishu), Dr Michael Mbito (Trans Nzoia), Petronila Were (Nominated) and Mercy Chebeni (Nominated), Governor Mandago said irregular disbursement of funds was the cause of debts in devolved units.
He pointed out that delays in disbursements has often caused debts owed to contractors and suppliers and in the process has slowed down implementation of development projects.
“It has reached a point where other contractors just keep off from government tenders because they might have encountered delays in payment in earlier undertakings,” said Mandago.
“Sometimes contractors can have their properties auctioned by banks for failure to honor debts, when the persons have millions of money still retained by government,”he added.
The County Boss regretted that the delays have had adverse effects on devolution.
Mandago’s sentiments come at a time when there has been an outcry in devolved units that the treasury has been delaying sending monies to counties, a move that has stalled development.
