North Rift Governors on Saturday graced the Regional Cross Country championships in Maralal, Samburu County.
Samburu Governor Mosel Lenolkulal played host to the Governors led by the NOREB Chairman Jackson Mandago(Uasin Gishu), Alex Tolgos(Elgeyo Marakwet), Patrick Khaemba(Trans Nzoia) and Stanley Kiptis(Baringo).
The athletic event had athletes from event saw the counties of Samburu, West Pokot, Turkana, Trans nzoia and Elgeyo Marakwet participating in it ahead of the national championships to be held on March 23 in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
Elgeyo Marakwet County emerged the overall winner with Trans Nzoia coming at second place and Samburu county at third place in the different categories of the championships.
The leaders said this was part of the efforts to promote the sports in the region.
Governor Mandago said through sports, communities in the region can become self reliant and shun outdated practices like cattle rustling.
“North Rift Economic Bloc(NOREB) believes in sports development as part of regional integration, investment and tourism,”said Mandago.
The regional championship attracted participants in 6KM (Junior women), 8KM (Junior men) and 10 KM (Senior men and women).
The climax of the competition will be national cross-country trials on 23th February in Uasin Gishu County where winners will represent Kenya in Denmark World cross-country championships on 30th March.
