Former Chesumei MP Elijah Lagat has said he will bow to public pressure and vie for Nandi governor in 2022.
Lagat unsuccessfully contested the parliamentary seat in 2017 and lost to Wilson Kogo.
Speaking over the weekend, the Former Boston Marathon Champion said he has been approached by a number of residents to contest for the top county seat.
“I have been approached by residents to run for the seat and I am considering it,” said Lagat.
Lagat is the first candidate to declare his interest to challenge the incumbent Governor Stephen Sang in the 2022 elections.
However, Lagat said even though he has declared intentions to run for the seat, he would not engage in early campaigns but give Sang full backing until he completes his first term.
In the last general elections, Lagat led more than ten Former Rift Valley MPs in joining NASA after they lost in the Jubilee primaries.
They then teamed up with Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and campaigned against Jubilee.
This put him at loggerheads with Deputy President William Ruto.
During a visit to Nandi County at the height of the 2017 campaigns, Ruto took a swipe at Lagat saying he had been duped by the unreasonable policies advocated by NASA.
“These people in NASA have said they will legalise chang’aa and busaa, and that is what might have excited him to join them,” the Deputy President said.
