Baringo County Women Rep Gladwell Tungo has backed the push for a referendum following the release of the Building Bridges Initiative(BBI) report.
Speaking over the weekend, Tungo opposed calls to have the document taken to Parliament.
The lawmaker said as it is Parliament can’t drive reforms.
“Parliament as it is can’t be trusted on such an important document. There has been a trend where important issues have been thrown out in Parliament for failing to get requisite numbers,”she said.
Tungo said the push for parliamentary initiative by some leaders allied to Deputy President William Ruto, might be a ploy to strangle the report in parliament.
She said the process must be driven by citizens and that people must be allowed to vote in a referendum.
“Kenyans should be given a chance to make amendments to the report. It has to go through a popular vote,”she added.
