Jonathan Bii has stormed to the front of candidates eyeing to succeed Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago in 2022.
With his latest political moves, the former Kanu strong man-turned Deputy President William Ruto ally, Bii has made into the list of top contenders for the gubernatorial race.
Among the top contenders for the seat include businessman Bundotich Zedekiah Kiprop alias Buzeki and Kenyan Ambassador to Pakistan Julius Bitok.
Buzeki contested and lost to Mandago in the 2017 polls and has since defected to Chama Cha Mashinani party.
Bitok on the other hand also lost to Mandago in 2013 polls and stood back in the 2017 and instead chose to support the incumbent to complete his two terms.
However, Bii’s latest movements have effectively made him a joint frontrunner with the duo.
In two major events in the county- Inua Mama and a fundraiser in Nyalilbei attended by top Jubilee honchos- Bii was the only non-elected leader who was given the chance to speak.
This has raised his stakes, coupled with his close association with Deputy President William Ruto’s aide Farouk Kibet and Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi.
He has also expressed his unwavering support for DP Ruto’s 2022 presidential bid, which has always been a factor in Uasin Gishu politics.
Bii has consistently impressed voters with his comical oratory skills and down to earth character.
Hailing from the larger Eldoret North is an added advantage for him. In the two previous elections, the northern part has adopted a block-voting pattern.
The ethnic factor is also likely to come in hand for Bii. It should be remembered that the last elections it played a significant role in Mandago’s win, the populous Nandi ethnic group ganged up to give the incumbent win.
Though Bii, Bitok and Buzeki are the top contenders at the moment, more names are still expected in the race to succeed Mandago.
