West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo on Thursday donned school uniform as he unveiled Sh400 million bursary fund.
The Governor excited residents after he appeared at the function clad in Ortum Boys uniform marked with his admission number 230.
Speaking during the event at his former high school, Governor Lonyangapuo said the bright and needy students will benefit from the bursary kitty which has increased from Sh300 million in 2019 to Sh400 million.
The bursary fund will go to students in secondary schools, colleges and Universities.
“Students from needy and vulnerable backgrounds will each get Sh25, 000, boarders Sh15, 000 each and Sh7, 000 each for day schoolers,” said the governor.
He said students from households affected by recent landslides will also be considered for an additional amount.
He said since the start of the bursary program, school retention and transition rates have improved significantly too.
He said his administration has put emphasis on matters education to help reduce Illiteracy levels and empower the people of West Pokot.
“We also have an active Adult Education program across the county. It has attracted several learners who are taught reading, writing and basic arithmetic,”he said.
