Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Alex Tolgos and Japanese Ambassador to Kenya Horie Ryoichi on Friday officially opened the Sh13 million fruit factory at AIC Cheptebo Rural development center.
The Japanese government had provided a grant of Sh8. 4 million for the construction of the fruit processing factory while the center put in an additional Sh4.6 million for the completion of the project.
Speaking during the event, Governor Tolgos called on farmers to ensure they meet the standards required to access the international market.
“You should avoid spraying your farms and instead use fruit fly traps for pure organic fruits that will attract international market,” said Tolgos.
On his part, the Japanese envoy said the project illustrated the commitment of his government in supporting the agriculture sector in Kenya.
He said the factory will enable farmers make value addition to their crops and reduce wastage during bumper harvest thus increasing farmers’ income.
The factory has provided employment to close to 50 staff and will serve 8,000 farmers.
The launch was also attended by Elgeyo Marakwet Deputy Governor Wisley Rotich, Keiyo South MP Daniel Rono and County Commissioner Ahmed Omar among others.
