Boda boda riders operating in Eldoret town were caught off guard on Tuesday evening after Uasin Gishu County Governor Jackson Mandago mounted an operation against those who have not paid their levies.
Governor Mandago and a team of county askaris launched an impromptu spot check at Highlands Inn along the Zion Mall-Kapsoya road where a number of defaulters were netted.
The 7pm crackdown saw a number of motorcycles without stickers to enable the operate being impounded.
Governor Mandago had in the past said tax was not negotiable and warned that those who fail to pay will face the full force of the law.
“Just like KRA says that paying taxes is self-reliance, Uasin Gishu residents must understand that taxes are a must,” he said.
According to the County Finance Act the boda boda riders are required to pay a monthly levy of Sh600.
The crackdown is part of the county efforts to boost revenue collection. Uasin Gishu is eyeing to meet Sh1 billion revenue target.
