Inspector General(IG) Hillary Mutyambai on Thursday ordered the immediate arrest and interdiction of a police officer involved in a shooting incident in Lessos, Nandi County.
Through his official Twitter Page, Mutyambai said the shooting incident ensued after a bodaboda rider carrying two pillion passengers was allegedly arrested for not wearing a face mask.
According to IG Mutyambai, other bodaboda riders then attacked the arresting officer and his colleagues and attempted to snatch a rifle while the arrested person was being escorted to Lesos Police Station.
Lazarus Tirop, a 40-year-old man, was shot and killed during this fracas, upon which the now irate crowd attempted to cause further destruction at the police station and torched the house of a senior officer, leading to the killing of two more people.
“Whereas we regret the loss of lives and remind all police officers that none is allowed to take the law into their own hands, we also request that our dear citizens uphold all our laws and cooperate with us towards a more secure country,” said Mutyambai.
The IG said he had written to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority(IPOA) to investigate the incident saying action will be taken against any other officers found culpable.
