Nandi County Senator Kiprotich Cherargei has accused police of using excessive force that resulted in two deaths and injuries while reacting to skirmishes along the Nandi-Kakamega border.
While seeking a statement on the floor of the House, Cherargei said police officers killed two unarmed men- Kevin Kipchumba and Bonface Kiprotich- who posed no threat to them.
The lawmaker termed the shooting of civilians as reckless and now wants the bereaved families compensated.
The Senator lodged has lodged a complaint with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority(IPOA) regarding the incident and demanded that action be taken against the officers involved.
“The issue at hand is a protracted dispute between residents of Nandi and Kakamega counties that saw people of Tabolwa village gather to respond to the misunderstanding. Unfortunately instead of the police maintaining law and order they resorted to shooting at the people recklessly,” read the letter to IPOA.
Cherargei called on IPOA to expedite the investigations and ensure that justice is served to the families of the deceased.
