Uasin Gishu County Senator Prof. Margaret Kamar has entered history books becoming the first female Senate Deputy Speaker.
Senator Kamar was officially sworn in as the Deputy Speaker of the Senate after being elected unopposed.
She takes over the position after the ouster of Kithure Kindiki after he fall out with party and was voted out by jubilee party.
The initial six contestant who showed interest to the vacant seat were Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga ,Charles Kibiru , Isaac Mwaura, Margaret Kamar, Stewart madzayo.
Nominated Millicent Omanga was the first person to drop from the race that left the four remaining Senators to battle for the vacant seat.
Today four Senators; Charles Kibiru, Judith Pareno, Isaac Mwaura and Stewart Madzayo who had returned their nomination withdrew their candidature for the election of the office of deputy speaker.
This left Prof. Kamar as the only candidate for election to the office of the Deputy Speaker therefore declined unopposed.
“I hereby declare Senator Margaret Kamar to be duly elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Senate,” declared Speaker Lusaka.
Senator Kamar took the oath of office and sworn in as the Deputy Speaker of the Senate.
