Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok on Saturday commissioned new market infrastructure to benefit traders in Kakuma, Turkana West.
Governor Nanok launched Towo Kayeni Fresh Food Market, in Kakuma Ward which is one of three markets constructed through partnership between World Food Programme (WFP) and the County Government.
The other two are Natukobenyo and Tumaini markets situated in the Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement Camp.
The three markets cost Sh23million and were funded by the European Union Trust Fund under the KISEDP, to serve a total of 330 host community and refugee traders.
The Governor highlighted partnership projects to grow the economy of Turkana West, and stated that the sub-county had access to more funds for investment than any other sub-county in Turkana.
The programmes include Kakuma World Bank/ IFC Sh2.5billion Kalobeyei Challenge Fund (KKCF) launched last June aimed at supporting growth of the private sector.
Turkana West MP Daniel Epuyo Nanok thanked WFP for the support and encouraged residents to take advantage of the market infrastructure to invest and grow businesses.
County Trade, Gender and Youth Affairs Executive Esther Lokwei asked the traders allocated stalls not to sell their stalls but use the opportunity to improve their livelihoods.
